Personal Project:

Thick-cut Bedside Table (Spalted Maple & Walnut)

This is the first piece I made from trees I cut down and milled on my own. There are meant to be two - one for each side of the bed - but I moved from Iowa to New Mexico before I could finish the second half and it is sitting in my shop awaiting completion.

The goal with these was to try my hand at working with very thick pieces - the kind of depth you wouldn’t normally be able to achieve without either breaking the bank or felling your own trees. This project also presented an interesting opportunity to see how wood movement is affected by air dried lumber as opposed to kiln dried. Typically kiln dried is always superior but given that these would be in my own home, I opted to use some pretty green wood (roughly 38% moisture) to see what would happen in a worst-case scenario.

Thus far, there has been no movement whatsoever despite the transition from the midwest environment to the southwest enviornment.
